The societal burdens of the drug, such as addiction, premature death, and drug treatment, cost the U.S. an estimated $23.4 billion, according to a Rand Corporation 2005 study. Although a detailed study of this magnitude has not been performed since, based on their data and adjusted for inflation, the real costs to the citizens is nearly $30.1 billion. That figure was the midpoint in the Rand Corporation study. Their high end would be well in excess of $50 billion U.S. dollars today.
