Fluff pulp is wood pulp that is used as an absorbent material in products, such as disposable diapers, feminine hygiene products, medical dressings, and absorbent pads in meat packaging. Fluff pulp is supplied to product manufacturers in sheet form. During the converting process, the dry fluff pulp sheet is shredded, or broken up into small fibers, and often mixed with other absorbent materials to form the absorbent core for a specific product. It is important for the fluff sheet to be strong enough to be handled but still easy to defibrate. The following properties are measured to determine fluff pulp quality: burst, shred energy, shred quality, absorption, and contamination. This course discusses how these properties are measured, why they matter to the customer, and what machine operators can do to affect them.
